Eden Valley Riesling

91 points - James Halliday

The Eden Valley has been producing magnificent fruit for winemaking for over 150 years. The quality of Eden Valley fruit has seen Eden Valley establish a reputation for some of the best Rieslings produced in Australia.

Our Riesling vineyards are located 440m above sea level which results in a long slow ripening period that produces limited tonnage and premium quality fruit. The quality of the fruit from our vineyard enables us to produce great Rieslings year after year.

Viticulture

Our Eden Valley Riesling vineyard is located on the Keyneton side of the Mount McKenzie range; this area typifies the Eden Valley region with its rolling hills and native gums amongst the out crops of moss rocks. 2006 was an exceptional Riesling year. Conditions were mild and following an even and lengthy ripening period the fruit offered citrus, lime and spice. The fruit was harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning ensuring the coolness of the night captured the freshness of flavour.

Winemaking

We have achieved a magnificent Riesling. The nose offers fresh fruit flavours of citrus and lime. The balance and structure of this wine will ensure crisp freshness in its youth; however you will be rewarded with an exceptional aged Riesling in 6-8 years. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and only the free runs (1st juice from the press) were fermented to produce this exceptional example of Eden Valley Riesling. Fermentation occurred over 12 days at cool temperature to retain the fresh fruit flavours.
